Echols to Face Williams

June 2nd 2009 06:55
“Kid Dynamite” Antwun Echols (31-10-4, 27 KOs) of Iowa has signed to face Phil Williams (10-1, 9 KOs) of Minneapolis this Friday June 5th at the Grand Casino in Hinckley, MN. Echols was brought in after Jaidon Codrington fell out as the opponent this past weekend. Echols, 37, is a former NABF and USBA title holder at middle and super middleweight. The bout will be at a weight of 170. This will be the lightest Williams will have weighed since making his pro debut in 2006. However, Williams was already at 170 last week when he informed MNboxing.com that he would face any Minnesota fighter at 160 or above. The co-main event pits Marcus ” Native Pride” Oliveria (17-0) and Otis “Triple OG” Griffin (19-5-2) together in a light heavyweight battle. Oliveria topped Phil Williams in one of the most exciting MN bouts in 2008 and looks to keep his unbeaten streak against Griffin who is best known for winning the reality show “The Next Great Champ.”

Hopoate vs McCall Confirmed

May 6th 2009 04:44
Former Australian heavyweight champion John Hopoate (11-2, 11 KOs) will clash with former WBC heavyweight champion Oliver McCall (51-9, 36 KOs) at the Orleans Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada on May 22nd. Hopoate, who scored a fourth round stoppage over American heavyweight Cliff Couser in March, also holds second round stoppage win over over former heavyweight contender Monte Barrett in 2007. He captured the national heavyweight crown in 2008 by stopping Bob Mirovic in nine rounds. Hopoate is 6 foot and weighs 240 pounds and was born in Tonga. McCall is 6 foot 2 inches and weighed 235 pounds for his last fight in 2007 when he dropped a decision to Juan Carlos Gomez but that same year he defeated highly regarded Sinan Samil Sam. Hopoate said. “I have been sparring with WBA#1 heavyweight Kali Meehan and Solomon Haumona. Oliver is now 44 years of age and why he may be past his prime anybody who used to be Mike Tyson’s sparring partner can obviously cop a punch. He has got ringcraft and experience but I am confident I can win this fight.” Hopoate’s trainer Dave Millward added “Hoppa is only a small fish in a big pond and if he wins he will have plenty of options presented to him.”

April 23rd 2009 06:20
On Sunday former WBA light-heavyweight and WBC interim super-middleweight champion Danny Green (25-3, 22KO’s) returns to the boxing ring after an eighteen month absence following the announcement of his retirement in March 2008. In the promotion entitled, “Unfinished Business” he takes on experienced South African Anthony Van Niekerk (21-6-2, 13KO’s) at the Challenge Stadium in Perth, Western Australia. This is the first fight in the Australian’s planned comeback, targeting former two-time WBA super-middleweight Anthony Mundine in perhaps Australia’s most lucrative fight in history when they plan to face off in front of 40,000 fans at the Subiaco Oval in Perth, early in 2010. Both of Sunday’s matched fighters met at the head to head press conference at the Rendezvous Hotel in Scarborough, Perth Wednesday and faced the media.

The 36 year old Western Australian, known as “The Green Machine” is excited about his ring return in his hometown of Perth and stated, “I just can’t wait to get back in the ring on Sunday. I am just trying to stay calm and stay cool. I am really excited to be fighting again and excited about fighting in my hometown of Perth. Hatton talks up Pacquiao fight

March 5th 2009 04:30
IBO light welterweight titleholder Ricky Hatton spoke to reporters today about his May 2 clash with Manny Pacquiao. “I strongly believe I will be as fast as Manny,” said the Hitman. “If I’m not as fast as Manny, I’ll only the narrowest of margins behind me. He’s going to get a shock.” Hatton wasn’t particularly impressed with Pacquiao’s KO win over Oscar De La Hoya. “I can’t think it was too hard to outbox Oscar that night and too hard to beat him…I would like to think I would have done the same.”

Darchinyan Destroys Trash Talking Arce

February 9th 2009 03:04
In a highly anticipated grudge match, unified IBF/WBA/WBC Super Flyweight Champion, Vic “Raging Bull” Darchinyan accepted the challenge of four time world champion and current interim WBA Superflyweight Champion, Jorge “Travieso” Arce.
There was no love lost between these two fighters who had their moments during the weeks leading up to the showdown. The 29 year old Arce, a winner of 31 of his last 32 fights, with 20 of those fights either being for a world championship belt or elimination fights for a world championship belt, hoped to be able to pull off a minor upset over the powerful Darchinyan.
Darchinyan, after unexpectedly losing his IBF Flyweight Championship to Nonito Donaire in July, 2007, has since been nearly invincible, going 4-0-1 including winning the IBF Superflyweight Championship with a convincing victory over Dmitri Kirilov, and then unifying the IBF/WBA/WBC Super Flyweight Championships with a crushing one-sided knockout victory over Cristian Mijares last November

Klitschkos want Valuev

January 27th 2009 05:44
Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko have announced that they feel WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev (holder of the only major heavyweight belt not held by a Klitschko) is avoiding them. “Around the world fans and experts want to see this fight,” WBC heavyweight Vitali Klitschko said today a news conference in Moscow. “But these promoters are doing everything to make sure that this fight doesn’t go ahead.” IBF/WBO/IBO champ Wladimir added “The most important thing is to bring the [Valuev's WBA] belt to the family.” The chance of a Klitschko-Valuev match coming anytime soon is remote, however. Valuev is committed to facing Ruslan Chagaev next (should Chagaev get past Carl Davis Drumond on February 7th). Vitali is committed to facing Juan Carlos Gomez and then Oleg Maskaev. Wladimir has an optional defense coming with David Haye and Chris Arreola having been mentioned as possible opponents.

Holllyfield Valuev Rematch?

December 23rd 2008 01:03
A rematch between WBA heavyweight champion Nikolai Valuev and ring legend Evander Holyfield could take place after Valuev's WBA-mandated fight against "champion in recess" Ruslan Chagaev. "Holyfield was impressive and the close result makes a rematch a possibility," stated Sauerland Event managing director Chris Meyer. "But Nikolai has to fight Chagaev first. There is no need for Chagaev to fight a different opponent before because Nikolai is ready and waiting for him. After that, we will see what happens."

"It was an honor for me to fight a legend like Evander Holyfield," Valuev said. "He proved that he is a great boxer. It was a very close and a very fast fight." His trainer Alexander Zimin added, "Niko was very cautious at the beginning. That was exactly what he needed to be against someone like Evander Holyfield, who is very experienced and has a great tactical knowledge. It would have taken a bad ending for us if Nikolai had tried to attack him from the first bell on. After five rounds he slowly adjusted to the pace and Holyfield´s style. Our tactics worked better from that point on
