Chad Dawson: The best Light Heavywieght today
October 10th 2007 00:38
Chad Dawson has been on a roll ever since he decisively beat former WBC Light Heavyweight champion Tomasz Adamek last March. Many boxing fans gave him little chance in beating Polosh champion. They were in for a surprise as "Bad" Chad dominated Adamek throughout the match. He had an 11th round scare as Adamek landed a powerful straight right sending Dawson to the canvas. Just as the Polish fans were celebrating after the knockdown, Chad got up, recovered and proceeded to beat his opponent again. He won by a wide unanimous decision (116-110, 117-109, 118-108) and claimed the WBC belt. This would be his chance to have his name noticed among the boxing fans but the media still has their attention focused on Bernard Hopkins, Roy Jones Jr., and Antonio Tarver.
Dawson then fought tough contender Jesus Ruiz last June. He displayed his fantastic boxing skills again then he TKOd Ruiz in the 6th after landing beautiful combinations. He was also supposed to fight his mandatory challenger Adrian Diaconu (who is overrated by Dawson haters) 2 weeks ago but ended up fighting Epifanio Mendoza after Diaconu pulled out with a hand injury. Dawson quickly stopped his opponent in the fourth. This time he moved even faster , he reminded me of a young Roy Jones Jr. without the unorthodox style. He was fast and hit Mendoza with hard punches in combinations. He totally showed his dominance one again and showed that he is the man to beat. The only problem is, the aging top Light Heavyweights and other contenders are avoiding him.
Dawson called out Antonio Tarver after his match against Mendoza. In the interviews with Tarver in other boxing websites, he seems to be dodging Dawson and was also asking for a higher pay. He is basically pricing himself out. Dawson's manager offered Tarver $2 million but was a no show just as the contract was about to be signed. He is probably afraid to face a young 25 year old champion in Chad Dawson. Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. never mention Dawson's name as their potential opponent. They are all dodging him. Jones Jr. will be fighting the Legend Felix "Tito" Trinidad who is even small for a middleweight while Hopkins fought Winky Wright who is also a middleweight. Why can't these guys just fight Chad Dawson since he is arguably the boxer in their division?
The other belt holders are also being protected by their promoters in Europe. Zsolt Erdei (WBO), Stipe Drews (WBA), Clinton Woods (IBF) are all Europeans and are not likely to face each other let alone WBC champion Chad Dawson no thanks to their respective promoters. Dawson was supposed to face Stipe Drews last year but Drews backed out from the fight. Zsolt Erdei is content in fighting journeymen in Hungary while Clinton Woods just recently beat aging contender Julio Gonzales.
I hope more people will watch Dawson's fights because he is just unstoppable and considered by many hardcore boxing fans the fighter in the Light Heavyweight division. B-hop and Jones should man up and fight him and Tarver should running with his tail between his legs.
