DANNY'S DEPARTURE KO'S BOXING
March 27th 2008 04:18
The sudden retirement of Australian Light Heavywieght World Champion Danny Green has shocked the boxing world and the Australian public in recent days.
Although Green departs the public domain having left his mark with many vivid memories throughout his career, he has also left millions of people asking why?
For the home grown Perth boy the answer is simple - There is life after boxing. His decision to walk away from the sport he loves was tough, he was a lover of the sport and a loved figure by many. It was made even tougher by the attractive and lucritave offer (around the $1 million mark) for the much anticipated rematch against colourful rival Anthny Mundine and a proposed battle aginst Roy Jones Jnr.
Rather than choosing the cash, Green chose his family. In Greens own words he admitted the distance and time away from his family and friends, coupled with the hard yards needed to succeed in the sport simply did not outwiegh relaxing with his kids and wife at his scarborough beach house.
His decision to walk away from the sport is admirable, however the timing of it was not. The sport of Boxing has grown enormous legs in Australia since the rivalry of Mudine and Green began and with both respected world champions in their weight divisions, the prospect of a rematch has been made that little bit more mouthwatering.
Now it seems as if the sport of boxing is destined to hibernate as a result of Green's shock decision. Sports stars are defined by the quality of opponents and rivalries they have in their era's. Can one imagine how the great Muhammad Ali would have been remembered had it not been for Joe Frazier and Goege Foreman? Australian boxing finally had their rivalry. The Green Mundine fight broke all the records - pay per view and crowd capapcity - Boxing was back! Now however, as quickly as it begun, it has ended. It appears now the biggest loss in the Danny Green retirement is boxing. Boxing and his fans.
Green is very much defined by his fans. The Australian public adored him. Green represented what we love about our country - Hard work, honesty and respect. However it seems Green managed to forget about another loved Australian law. - "You get what you give".
Danny Green has given alot to boxing, but it seems as though he has forgotten to give something back to his fans for the dedicated support they gave him throughout his career. Green was scheduled to defend his world title on April 27 against Argentine Hugo Garay. It would have been fitting for Green to give his fans the opportunity to say goodbye to their hero, it appears now that opportunity will never occur.
Green summed it up as blunt as one can, stating, "I'll never be back."
