Floyd Mayweather Jr.: It Will Be A Rough Night For Him vs. Hatton
October 24th 2007 19:06
Multi-division champion and #1 rated p4p boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. is currently one of the best fighters in the sport of boxing today. Boasting 38 wins with 24 KOs and no losses in his record, Floyd has done it all in 5 weight divisions. He captured belts starting in the Super Featherweights, all the way to the Junior Middleweight division. His talent and brilliant boxing skills is what gives him all these wins. He is one of the most elusive fighters today thanks to his fast reflexes and shoulder roll defense. Few boxers come close with the way he makes his opponents miss and he will counter his opponent with every opportunity he gets. But somehow, I think he is one of today's most hated boxer. He acts like a thug outside the ring causing many boxing fans and casual fans to be turned off with his antics. I admit that I am not a fan of his out-of-the-ring attitude, but I am a fan of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. boxer.
He was recently voted off the "Dancing With The Stars" show after garnering low scores in his dance number with his partner. I am glad because he can now focus on the next challenge that awaits him in boxing. That is none other than Ricky "The Hitman" Hatton. Boxing fans are in anticipation of Hatton-Mayweather mega-fight entitled "Undefeated" by HBO since Hatton is also undefeated with 43 wins and . Their December 8th match in Las Vegas already sold out the arena and thousands Hatton supporters from are expected to be among the audiences on that night and millions are expected to watch from their TVs worldwide. These 2 boxers have been verbally attacking each other for years and they can settle the score inside the squared ring.
From what I see, Hatton will give Mayweather a hard time in their fight. The "Hit Man" is good at pressuring his opponents, he just keeps coming forward and unleashes uppercuts and hooks to the body and head. He stopped Jose Luis Castillo last June with the very same tactic. He will never give his opponent any space and also ties them up strategically. Mayweather had problems with this type of pressure. He also fought Castillo when he was still in the Lightweight division. Castillo bullied Floyd to the ropes many time during their first match and was able to tag him with punches. A lot of boxing fans who saw that fight say Mayweather should have lost that bout. This time he will be facing a guy who does the same thing only Hatton is physically stronger and bigger than Castillo. He might get bullied and hit with hard body shots in the fight if he lets Hatton set the pace of the fight.
Mayweather's best weapon would be his speed and great defense. He is very light on his feet and it gives his opponents a hard time chasing him around the ring. He hasn't carried his punching power well in the Welterweights compared to the time when he was fighting in 130 and 135 lb division. He now relies on his excellent counter punching ability and well placed shots to score points but he was able to stun Oscar De La Hoya a couple of times during their Jr. Middleweight match last May. I hope he does not run away often just like what he did against Carlos Baldomir last year. People booed the heck out him because he was dominating the fight and just proceeded play with Baldomir for 12 rounds causing the arena audience to leave early because Floyd was making it boring. He made up for that after he won a UD over De La Hoya by standing toe-to-toe with him most of the time in their match. I wonder how will Floyd deal with Hatton's clinching? He will have to muscle his way out of Hatton's strong clinches or "hugging" as many boxing fans would say.
I think it is wrong for people to think that Hatton doesn't stand any chance against Mayweather. He is a very formidable opponent and he will be a big challenge for Floyd. I believe the boxing fans will be treated to an interesting match between these two. A pressure fighter versus an elusive fighter. Both are undefeated but one man's 0 has got to go. I am not sure who prevails in this fight but all I know is that this will be a good match.
