Head-2-Head: Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Rocky Juarez
November 4th 2007 00:43
These 2 boxers should have fought two months ago if it weren't for Marquez's unfortunate left hand injury. I am also excited for this match since we have two top boxers in the Super Featherweight Division facing each other. I think Marquez is the better of the two since he is more technically sound and probably one of the best counter punchers today. He has fought the tougher opposition and is a proven boxer. Rocky Juarez is no slouch but I think Marquez is on a different level than him. He still has a puncher's chance in this fight because he is a hard puncher and he can potentially steal some rounds because Marquez is more susceptible to straight shots these days (as evidenced in his fight against Jandaeng, Barrera, and Jaca). The fight can be entertaining since these fighters like to stand toe-to-toe and I predict that there will be a bunch of heated exchanges in each round. But anyways, here are some of the comparisons for both fighters:
Power - Juarez is no doubt the harder hitter between the two. Juarez possesses a punch that can badly hurt an opponent and he also has 19 KOs in 27 wins. If he catches Marquez square with his power punches, he can definitely steal the WBC belt away. But Marquez also has good pop in his punches. He KOd 35 opponents in his 47 wins but most of them were from accumulation of punches thanks to his brilliant counter punching. He still has the power to hurt Juarez with a well placed counter shot.
Advantage: Juarez
Skills - Marquez is one of the best skilled boxers today. He is a machine when it comes to countering his opponents and making them look bad. He schooled Manny Pacquiao in their controversial match 3 years ago after getting up from three knockdowns. He is great at punching in selective angles and that makes him a lethal opponent. He still isn't perfect but he definitely is highly skilled. Juarez is a powerful 130 lber but he does not posses the skill and speed of Marquez.
Advantage: Marquez
Defense - Marquez has an edge in making his opponents miss then firing with his own punch.
He has a respectable defense because of his quick reflexes and decent head movement. But in his recent fights, he was more susceptible to straight punches and he was even dropped by Barrera. Juarez as mentioned is slower but he gets hit a lot more than Marquez. If Marquez boxes him, he will eat more punches.
Advantage: Marquez
Chin - I think Juarez has a better chin than Marquez. In his fight against Barrera, he was outpointed but he wasn't in danger of getting KOd. Marquez was dropped before and was stunned when he fought Jandaeng and Jaca. He will go down or will be badly hurt if Juarez connects to his chin flush.
Adavantage: Juarez
Reach - Marquez stands at 5'7" with a 67" wingspan while Juarez is 5'5" with 69" on him. Marquez has a skill in keeping his opponents away especially if he is fighting a guy who constantly moves forward like Juarez. Marquez has a clear edge here.
Advantage: Marquez
Overall - I predict an exciting match between these two. Both of these boxers have enough guts and heart to finish a fight. They also prefer slugging it out at the center of the ring but I give Marquez an edge because of his excellent skill and decent power. Juarez has puncher's no doubt and I see him wobbling Marquez a couple of times in the fight. Predict Marquez with unanimous decision win.
