Juan Diaz: The New Star of the Lightweight Division
October 15th 2007 12:09
At a young age of 24 years, Juan "The Baby Bull" Diaz accomplished a huge feat a few talented and tough boxers could achieve. He claimed his first Lightweight Championship belt 3 years ago when he decisively beat tough former champion Lakva Sim for the WBA title. Then he won 6 straight matches defeating contenders such as Jose Miguel Cotto, Randy Suico, Fernando Angulo before landing a unification match between then WBO Champion Acelino Freitas. Diaz fought like bull (no pun intended), always coming forward and throwing numerous punches to Acelino's face and body and pummeling him from pillar to post. Freitas eventually gave up before the 8th round started because of the punishment dealt by his young foe. His next match would be against IBF Champion Julio Diaz which just happened last Saturday. He showed dominance again and proceeded to pound Julio. Like Freitas, Julio quit before the 9th round bell started because he was becoming more of punching bag before he quit in his stool. There is just no stopping "The Baby Bull".
Juan Diaz's style is difficult for boxers to figure out. He maybe more of a brawler but he does it really well. He always comes forward and throws hundreds of punches in each round without tiring. He lacks KO power in his hands but it is his accumulation of punches that stops his opponents on their tracks. He will never give his foe enough space to launch a counter attack. His way of fighting will always provide quality boxing entertainment to hardcore and casual boxing fans alike.
His next fight should be against the WBC title holders Joel Casamayor or David Diaz. Joel Casamayor is a slick boxer with decent power and would likely pose a big problem for Juan Diaz. His technical skills are really top notch and he punches hard enough to rock his opponents. David Diaz in my opinion would suffer the same like Freitas and Julio Diaz.
Juan Diaz also called out #1 Super featherweight Manny Pacquiao for a mega fight. Now this is a fight to watch. Both fighters like to slug to it out, they throw numerous punches in each round and are capable stopping their foes. The punching power edge may be given to Pacquiao since he carries his power well as he moves up in weight.
Juan Diaz is currently the best Lightweight today and its biggest star. Other people may say Joel Casamayor is the True Lightweight Champion, too bad he has been so inactive it is becoming ridiculous. Juan Diaz can keep undefeated record for a long time as long as he fights the same way he beats up his challengers. He truly is the new star of the Lightweight division.
