Juan Manuel Marquez: Pacquiao Rematch Getting Closer
November 1st 2007 04:59
A rematch with Pacquiao looms closer now that WBC has ordered Juan Manuel Marquez to face him. This is a rematch that many boxing fans have been wanting to see after their very intriguing first fight. Marquez was decked three times in the first round when Pacman was right target with his hard left straight. Despite being on the verge of losing, Marquez got up each time he was dropped and focused on taking Manny Pacquiao to the distance. He recovered in the 2nd round and started to put on a boxing clinic. Pacquiao still won a few rounds but Marquez was scoring great counter punches every time Manny comes close. He won more rounds than Manny but in my opinion, Marquez should have lost that fight because of the 3 knockdowns Pacquiao scored but the judges scored it a draw. Now more than 3 years after that fight, the bout will happen if Marquez defends his WBC Super Featherweight Title against the hard hitting Rocky Juarez.
But seriously, I think their rematch should have happened two years ago or may be last year. I blame Marquez's manager/trainer Nacho Beristain for taking some questionable steps after the Pacquiao fight. Talks about their rematch surfaced during the post-fight press conference. Then after months of negotiations, Beristain was asking for a larger sum of money before fighting Pacquiao again. It is excusable that he chose to fight Victor Polo 5 months after slugging it out with the Pacman but it appeared that Marquez and his manager priced themselves out. Beristain made another questionable decision when he signed Marquez to fight Chris John in Indonesia for a mere $30,000. Marquez would have made more than a million dollars if he faced Pacquiao during that time. Marquez lost that fight and was a victim of a hometown robbery. Marquez returned shortly to face Terdask Jandaeng, a boxer who fought mainly in Thailand against journeymen. Marquez won by a 7th round TKO but he was hit numerous with straights to his face. The same thing happened when he fought Jimrex Jaca, a prospect fighting out of the Philippines. He had a nasty cut in that fight but he still won by KO in the 9th round. He was also signed by Golden Boy Promotions before that fight, which means that he will once again be in a big money fight.
He won his WBC belt when he challenged the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera last March. It was an exciting fight because of the great display of skill shown by both fighters. Marquez had a hard time fighting the always game Barrera. The fight was close but Marquez was awarded with the victory.
I think Marquez would have a better chance in beating Manny Pacquiao had their supposed second fight happened sooner. Manny Pacquiao is visibly more improved and appears unbeatable today. He was once a one-dimensional fighter, he just relies on throwing jabs and straights hundreds of time in each round but now he is more well rounded but still has his powerful punches. He will be fighting a tougher Pacquiao compared to the one he was outboxing 3 years ago. I still think he can box Pacquiao but he will have to work harder this time.
I just hope he beats Juarez this Saturday so that long awaited rematch against Manny Pacquiao can finally happen.
