MICK GATTO - HEAVYWEIGHT BOXER OR GANG MEMBER? (LINK)

The controversial television series Underbelly - based on the underworld shootings in Melbourne from 1995 – 2006 - is finally in full swing in all parts of Australia (except for Victoria). Australian audiences are already fascinated with many of the underworld characters, especially Mick Gatto. In particular, questions are already milling about the ‘Carlton Crew’ stand-over man and his Heavyweight boxing career.
For the record the rumors are true. Mick Gatto fought a total of 9 fights from 1973 – 1979 for a return of 5 wins (3KO) and 4 losses.
After stamping his mark on the heavyweight scene winning his first four bouts in a three month period, Gatto struggled beating only one opponent in his final five fights before finally hanging up the gloves.
While his stint in boxing was very short, he was at one stage in line for a national title bout. Since retiring Gatto has actively been involved in Melbourne’s boxing scene and was recently reported to be sparring with Jeff Fenech in preparation for his comeback rematch against Azumah Nelson.
