Roy Jones Jr.: He Has Nothing To Gain vs. Tito Trinidad

October 21st 2007 05:16
Felix Trinidad and Roy Jones Jr.
As many boxing already know worldwide, the once dominant Roy Jones Jr. is set take on retired legend Felix "Tito" Trinidad on the 19th of January, 2008. But instead of excitement, many boxing fans responded with a huge question mark on their heads. Why of why would Roy Jones Jr. pick Trinidad as his opponent? Trinidad has been retired for more than two years and badly lost his last fight against Winky Wright. The answer is no doubt MONEY. Trinidad still is a big name and still popular especially to his native country Puerto Rico. But still, that is just a bad selection for Jones, who is also reputed to back away from fights if his pay not high enough for him. There are many other Light Heavyweights out there that could bring him money and more adoration from boxing fans. He should challenge the champions like Chad Dawson (WBC) Zsolt Erdei (WBO) but it looks like he is more interested on feasting on lower quality opposition. Yes, I am calling Tito Trinidad "low quality" today because at this stage, he would not put up much of a fight. He is out of the ring for 2 years, lost to a technically savvy veteran in Winky Wright and he was already small as a Middleweight years ago but now he signs to battle a Light Heavyweight. In comparison, Jones Jr. had been fighting at a rate of 1 boxing match a year but he is still actively training. He has shown flashes of his old self when he fought Anthony Hanshaw last July (another low-quality opponent).

Roy Jones Jr. is really kind of dumb these days. He avoids young and formidable boxers like Dawson and backed out of mega fights because he always has issues with money. I'd say Roy does not have any power to dictate who he fights or how much money should he get since his career is still on a downward spiral. Let's face it, he is not the same unbeatable Roy Jones Jr. we saw 5 years ago. If he was still that guy, promoters will no doubt let him decide and the boxing fans would still look at him highly. Signing in to fight Tito Trinidad is pretty much a joke. He has nothing gain in this fight and if he loses, a big IF, he will surely be verbally lambasted again by his critics. He should have went with the supposed Bernard Hopkins fight but once again, he priced himself out.

If he wants to regain some of his old glory, he better fight the younger and tougher guys in the Light Heavyweight division. Many boxing entusiasts are already getting tired of him and will likely treat his match with Trinidad as more of a novelty rather than a serious boxing match.
