Shane Mosley: Still Fast And Powerful at 36
November 8th 2007 21:46
Shane Mosley is another example of a boxer who is supposedly at the tail end of his career because of his age but he seems to defy it. At the age of 36, Mosley still looks really fast, like Zab Judah fast and the power in his punches still devastating. From the opinions I've read around the web concerning his fight with Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico, most boxing fans are picking the Puerto Rican to go through Mosley because he is younger and just as strong. In my opinion, Mosley still has a good chance of winning by KO or by unanimous decision in this fight. I don't think Cotto's chin can handle Mosley's power if he gets tagged repeatedly like in the Zab Judah fight. Mosley also has expience on his side because he fought highly ranked fighters such as Vernon Forres (Lost 2x), Winky Wright (Lost 2x), Oscar De La Hoya, Jesse James Leija, and Fernando Vargas.
I saw some of Mosley's training videos and Whoah!! He is one scary 36 year old. He was punishing his younger sparring partners with his lethal punches and making them miss with his unbelievable speed. Before I watched that footage, I thought that Mosley would look slower but he proved me wrong. It was like watching Floyd Mayweather Jr. train but with more pop in his punches. He moves around the ring like with his great footwork, utilizes his speed to counter, slip punches and deliver fast combinations with great power. It was also a sight to see when he was hitting the pads. His hand speed was so fast, it was like seeing a blur when he unloads on the mitts.
His last fight with the former WBA Welterweight Champion, Luis Collazo, showed that he could still hang with the younger fighters. Collazo may not be on par with Cotto on power but he does have speed and skill in his arsenal. He gave Ricky Hatton all he could handle but he lost by a close decision which was disputed because some people think Collazo should have gotten the nod. When Mosley fought Collazo, he just dominated him for 12 rounds. Collazo was already fast but Mosley was just faster. He was outworking him and outboxing him in the fight and was tagging him with hard punches. I thought that Collazo would provide a steep challenge because he is quick but Mosley just beat him to the punch. It was like watching a young Shane Mosley in action. I also thought that Mosley would slow down because he was coming down in weight from the Junior Middleweights.
Now his fight with Cotto is still kind of a mystery to me. I am still not sure who wins because both guys are just tremendously gifted with skill and power. Can Mosley deal with Cotto's bullying and pressuring tactics? Yes he can because he is also a good counter puncher. Cotto was rocked a several times by a counter uppercut and straight punches Judah while he was closing in on him. He clinched to survive the onslaught but I don't think he can do the same against Mosley. Shane is just as fast as Judah but he hits harder. But what about Cotto's brutal body punching, is Mosley sturdy enough to withstand it? I am not sure about this one but I also know that Mosley is just as punishing with his body shots. Judah just gave up when Cotto started to land more and had no heart to last the fight unlike Mosley who shows tremendous will and will always try to get the win. I just hope Mosley doesn't get old overnight on the night of the fight.
I am just excited in this terrific match. I know both guys are hungry for glory and will not stop till they get the victory. I believe Mosley can show the world that he is still formidable and championship material despite being 36 years old. Heck, Joe Calzaghe dominated a younger foe last week at the age of 35 and I think Mosley has the power, speed and skill to grab the win.
