The Crusierveight Division: Under Exposed by Boxing Promoters

October 19th 2007 00:58
This is one of the mysteries I really don't get about the sport of boxing. Promoters like Don King, Bob Arum, Lou DiBella and many more are not giving the Cruiserweight much exposure. Right now, I consider the Cruiserweights to be one of the most exciting division today. If boxing fans and promoters are somewhat bored of the mediocre situation currently happening in Heavyweights, they as might as well provide some spotlight and more exposure for these guys. The Cruiserweight or the 200 lb division is filled with talented boxers. They might be slightly smaller than the Heavyweights but they do deliver exciting matches. They too are considered big men and hit almost or just as hard as the heavies.

Mormeck jabbing Bell's face
Let's take WBC and WBA Cruiserweight champion Jean-Marc Mormeck of France for example, he is currently rated #1 in the 200 lb division and all of his matches brings the crowd off their seats. His recent battle with #2 O'neil Bell is one the best fights to happen this year. Both guys threw powerful punches with reckless abandon making the fight close but with a slight edge to Mormeck. I'd say that bout was a sight to see and definitely should be watched by any boxing enthusiasts. The sad thing is, only the hardcore boxing fans got the attention for this fight and there are not that many. Props to Don King for providing a USA telecast for this fight but the attention they are garnering is not that good. The promoters should step up the exposure these Cruisers should get. It is just horrible when only a few people would only get to see their world class talents.

Right now Mormeck is preparing for his title defense against the tall and rangy David Haye of UK. I hope many people will watch this fight. Aside from Mormeck, there are also a bunch of talented Cruiserweights that boxing fans should look out for. Heavy hitters like David Haye ans O'neil Bell are already a given. We also have big puncher WBO champion Enzo Maccarinelli, the tall skilled IBF Champ Steve Cunningham. Then there are numerous highly regarded contenders like Marco Huck, Vadim Tokarev, Darnell Wilson, BJ Flores, Jonathon Banks and many more.

I just don't get why these promoters give little attention to these talented bunch of big men. I think it is also the reason why Evander Holyfield left the Cruiserweights because of the lack of attention that division is getting. Give them a chance to showcase their skills to more audiences you rich promoters... Pretty please...
