Thoughts on Ibragimov/Holyfield fight
October 14th 2007 11:42
I'd say the WBO Heavyweight Championship match between Sultan Ibragimov and Evander Holyfield was a mixed bag. This was a fight between a younger champion and an aging former champion/challenger. The fight itself was not that entertaining but it was a quality fight. The champion racked up points and threw more punches against Holyfield. Ibragimov reminded me of Floyd Mayweather because of the way he fights. What bothers me though was that he was very cautious the whole time even though his opponent is not a power puncher. He would throw combinations then move out of the way before Evander answers back with his own punches. Holyfield started strong in the first 6 rounds before dropping his punch output. I think his age, again, caught up with him. He wasn't throwing punches frequently in the last 6 rounds and started to get hit at will by Ibragimov. He landed a strong right hand in the 12th but it wasn't enough to earn some points with the judges.
On the fighters themselves, Ibragimov boxed strategically throughout the bout, picking his shots carefully and timed punching combinations well. He showed good handspeed and great head movement. He has a good pop in his punches but he doesn't have one punch KO power. He can be a good mainstay in the Heavyweight division especially since he has the WBO belt. It remains to be seen how he would handle the bigger and talented Heavyweights like Wladimir and Vitaly Klitschko, Tony Thompson and a healthy Shannon Briggs.
Evander Holyfield showed heart in the fight, refusing to go down and finished the match. It is apparent that his age caught up with him since he a shell of his former self compared to his '90s prowess. He mentioned he still won't retire during the post fight press conference. I think he should quit the fight game with his faculties intact since fighting in his advanced age can be dangerous to his health (and his brain).
It was a good match for hardcore boxing fans and maybe some casual fans of the sport would watch it.
I'd say the fight itself would be a 3/5.
