Vic Darchinyan On The Road to Championship Again
October 16th 2007 12:43
Former IBF and IBO Flyweight Champion Vic "Raging Bull" of Australia by way of Armenia will return once again to the squared ring to face obscure and unheralded Federico Catubay of the Philippines for the vacant IBO Super Flyweight Belt. Darchinyan is coming off a 5th round TKO loss against another Filipino Nonito Donaire. Vic fought Donaire with his usual style which arrogantly dropping his hands and looking for a good angle to launch a powerful punch. It may have worked against lesses competition but against Nonito, he had his hands full. He was thoroughly dominated the while fight before succumbing to a huge left hook that dropped him. Vic rose on shaky legs and fell down to the canvas again forcing the referee to stop the contest in the 5th round. His arrogance and bad defense caused him his 1st loss and his belts.
I hope he has learned his lesson after that shocking loss. It seems that his unorthodox style works only against opponents who are afraid to trade punches with him. But when pitted with the likes of Nonito Donaire, who is technically skilled and hits hard, he will always have problems with those type of boxers. His trainer should tell him to keep up his hands up all night and stop acting very cocky. He should also learn how to throw combinations instead of relying on a single power punch to connect.
Fortunately for him, his handlers got a journeyman for his comeback fight. I expect Vic to walk through his opponent this Saturday. He will be moving up 3 pounds north and will have to deal with fighters who are a bit bigger than him and hit harder than his previous opponents. It will be very hard for him to fight the top guys in the Super Flyweights like Z Gorres, Cristian Mijares, and Fernando Montiel. But best of luck to him.
